Map: How much energy can you generate?
Many of Barcelona’s buildings have suitable conditions for installing power generation equipment on their roof terraces. The City Council has compiled the Barcelona Energy Resources Map so you can learn all about this energy-generating potential.
This map classes buildings according to their energy yield (solar photovoltaic, solar thermal or mini-wind power) and also gives information on the energy that could be generated, the greenhouse-gas emissions that could be cut and the estimated cost of the investment that would have to be made.
The map provides an area of 7,899,532 m2 for capturing sunlight, taking into account the fact that sunlight-exposed roofs are considered as optimal for solar-energy generation.
According to these data, the generating potential of roof terraces is:
- 1,191 GWh/year of solar photovoltaic energy, a quantity that is equivalent to roughly 60% of the electricity consumption of Barcelona’s domestic sector.
- 5,495 GWh/year of solar thermal energy, which is equivalent to the annual consumption for obtaining domestic hot water for some 4,000 Les Picornell-sized swimming pools.
